Atari 1050 Disk Drive
The Atari 1050 disk drive was a 5-1/4" 1-1/2 density disk drive introduced
with the XL-series of Atari 8bit computers. It was styled to complement the
XL-series, with it's dark top and beige lower casing, with the chrome metal
band seperating the two. It had a capacity of 127k and much has been said
about Atari's decision not to make the drive true double-density, most of it
negative. It was a 1/2 height drive and connected to the Atari 8bit computer
by way of the standard SIO port. Since it wasn't truly a double-density
drive, it was labled as 'enhanced density' and had a transfer rate of 19.2
kbps, the same as the 810 drive, though various upgrades pushed this higher
as well as turned it into a true double-density drive.
