Sometimes, one gets lucky and comes across a prototype that escaped being destroyed or otherwise lost. Some prototypes are one-off units that in no way represent a production machine but are only design excersises, while others are handmade and actually used for development and still others are used to finallize a design just prior to production. The prototypes listed below represent more modern machines, those made in the late 1980's and later, as prototypes of earlier 8bit machines and such have long since found homes in various collections.
